Holidays

There's something wonderful about seeing new places. As my holiday in New Zealand draws to a close I'm reflecting on the great times we've had while away.

This is surely one of the most beautiful of countries. In the last week we've seen majestic mountains, geysers shooting water and steam up into the air, volcanoes with sulphurous atmosphetes, and glorious, albeit sometimes rugged, coasts. With many inlets and bays, some hidden and suddenly 'happenned' upon and others broad and expansive, the coast here is certainly magnificent.

As I've travelled this way, I'm reminded of a wonderful story I read as a kid many years ago. I wish I could remember the name of the book. As we drove through the towns and over inlets in the Bay of Plenty region and the Coromandel Peninsular I could imagine how this story could be written. Maybe it's even based on this area. I do not know and perhaps one day I will find out. But for now, imagination will have to suffice.

We've experienced all kinds of weather too, from a wet beginning to beautiful warm sunny days (with the occasional afternoon deluge). The weather is constantly changing and this adds to the unique beauty of this land.

One of the early highlights was discovering a friend living close by in Hamilton, our first stop, and being able to catch up with one another. We've also tramped all over White Island, an active volcano, fulfilling a dream I've had to visit, walked on the hottest sand I've ever been on at Hot Springs beach and discovered places we'd only read about before.

I've taken close to 1000 photos, maybe more, and searched for that 'perfect shot'. I will sort through my photos and collate them. The best I will bring together in a photo book as a reminder of this special time. We'll be back for sure. There is still the South Island waiting for discovery.

This trip was in a way unexpected but it has been a blessing to be able to take a much needed break, and has turned out to be one of the most enjoyable weeks of the year.
